Ethical Analysis

24.07.2012

Ethical Analysis

Today we continue the previous days' lecture on Ethics. There are two main parts in ethical analysis.
  • First we identify the stake holders involved in the ethical issues and fact that pertaining to the information technology issues.
  • Secondly we discussed about what exactly happens to the those information technology issues.
It describes in four ways.
  1. Conflicts - This can be happen in among two or more than two people. Lecturer explain it in this way.
ex: Imagine that Sahan is taking pen from Thaiyaba's bag with out knowing her. It is unethical    to take anything from someones bag. This can be a conflict to Thaiyaba.

     2.  Dilemma - According to Sahan's example we can not say that taking something from someone's bag is                     good or bad thing either they are friends.

    3.  Direct involves - Check who was the directly involved people to the situation. Who effected by that   incident.

    4.  Alternatives - We can select the different alternatives. It effects to all in the organization, because of the sequences of this incident. It is a win win situation to bath parties.
ex: We can warn to Sahan not to take anything from others with out knowing that person.

Business Ethics.

Business ethics are the study of business situations, activities and decisions where issues of right and wrong are addressed.
ex: A well-known pharmaceutical company caused with ethical issue. They distribute a anti depressants drug which suitable for adults. They didn't analyze it for children but they advertised it for both children and adults. That company going with an unethical practice.
Elephant House used to put their garbage in to Bere lake. It also a unethical incident.

According to those two examples that we can identify what the businesses are doing right or wrong thing.

Because of these unethical practices customers would face many difficulties. To avoid these unethical practices people establishes consumer protected agencies to protect them from businesses organizations.

Characteristics of Business Ethics.

Characteristics of business ethics are what they should do and how it will give the guild lines that need to follow. There are two characteristics in business ethics.
  • Tells people what they ought to do.
  • Set of principles or rules.
Ethics comes with social responsibilities. It is a win win situation.

Concepts of Business Ethics.

These concepts are developed by moral philosophers over generations. Also these concepts are distinguish ethical from unethical behaviors. Given below concept has problems.
  • Relativism
           - There is no human standards. Because actions should be justifiable.
           - It depends on society to society.
           - Ethics are relative with morality.
ex: Some people in Africa who eats cannibals. They believe that it is justifiable for them but it won't for other societies.
  • Egoism
           - One person should act as that person's set of personal interests.
           - Egoism believes that self interests are should not against laws.
           - Ethical behaviors are promotes person's own self interests.
                         ex:  Drive fast.
                               Do not ware seat belts.
  • Utilitarianism
           - This action could be ethical or not.
           - The morality of the action can be determine by its consequences.
           - That action is ethical if it promotes the greatest good for the greatest amount.
ex: Harry Truman decided to drop the bomb to Hiroshima.
        - Although this action was unethical consequences was good because if this not happened the 2nd world war will still continue.
  • Deontologism
           - Actions are not justified by their consequences.
           - Factors other than good outcomes determine the rightness of action.
                         ex: Killing a murderer.

There are different between utilitarianism and deontologism. Utilitarianism ends with justifying the means and deontologism means which are important.

General Ethical Behavior.

  • Builds security.
  • Friendliness.
  • Cooperation and trust in a society.

Ethical Tests.

  1. Is it Ethical?
          i Ethical - Legal
         ii Ethical - Illegal
        iii Unethical - Legal
        iv Unethical - Illegal

i and iv are easy to do.
iv and iii are difficult to do.

     2.   Benefit Cost Test
           - Benefits exceed to cover the costs.
ex: According to the nuclear bomb, United Status government costs for it. But benefits are more that costs.
The action can be justifiable.

     3.   Light of Day Test.
           - What would happen if your reaction were bought into the public.
ex: Imagine that you were organized a party in your home. If something unethical thing happened in your home premises. When it is goes to public, other people will react it as a wrong thing. Because public will think it as a unethical thing, but to you it is a okay for you.

     4.   Do Unto Others Test.
           - If something good happened to you then it is ethical.

     5.   Ventilation Test.
           - Something happens , seeks out from others views.

After discussing all of these ethical tests, lecturer gave us to following incidents to choose the each incident.

  • Robbing a bank.
  • Driving above the speed limit.
  • Cheating on an exam.

Learning gain of the Lecture

Got to know about what was ethical analysis, business ethics, characteristics of business ethics, concepts of business ethics, what are the tests that do for check the ethical issues.

Personal Opinion

Ethics & Codes of Conduct

23.07.2012

Ethics & Codes of Conduct

Today we discussed about the foundation of the Ethics.

What is Ethics?

Basically ethics are good practices, what we follow, something which we really do like guidelines. Also it is a moral values which all people are considers. It points society to balance.
Ethics consists with two points, which are religion and low.
  • Religion - It is a program like a software. It teachers you how you are associated with people. These are the things that you should do and what basically you should not do. It covers the certain spectrum. Also it is like a guild lines.
  • Low - Low covers the remaining spectrum of the ethics.
That remaining ethics are what we think is good. It depends on person to person, country to country, region to region.
             ex: Public affection.
                  Look after you parents.

Also ethics are tend to revert generation to generation.
ex: Now a days smoking is prohibited in public places in Sri Lanka. It is unethical when some        smoke in public. Also there is a low to act that people who smoke in public.

How does IT create ethical problems?

From the revaluation of the open economy there are lots of good and bad things came to Sri Lanka. When we are talking about the Information Technology it changes day by day.
ex: People get spoils - Children get spoiled because of the pornography.
Some websites are tracking users all movements and sell it to other organisations - That is why  people get lot of spam emails from unknown users.

When we are talking about ethics there are three types of eyes which we should identify.
  • What others think about of myself.
  • What I think about myself.
  • What I am really am, actual person.
So someone (It can be a person or software or expert system) somewhere in the internet really know about who I am.

Types of Privacy.

We discussed about privacy of solitude, means that information privacy put in a physical location. It also called as Inter mercy related to Information. There are many levels of  inter mercy and information. As a example we'll see it based on the relationships.
  • Friends to friends
  • Partner to partner
  • Husband & wife
Among these classifications of groups we can understand what kind of relationship they have each other. Two or more friends relationship is some what close to each other. Partners relationship will be close relationship than friends relationship. Husband and wife relationship will most close relationship than other two parties.

Finally, Ethics are moral values to guide someone's life acting as a decision maker to highlight what is right and what is wrong.

Basic Concepts of Ethics.

  • Responsibility - Person who is acting ethically is more responsible because finally it is an accountability.
  • Accountability - If something goes wrong that person should get the responsible for that, means that responsible person have to bear the consequences.
ex: Class monitor has to take the whole responsibility of the class, if something happens.
  • Liability
At the end of the lecture we discussed about how to handle the ethical situations. Lecturer divided the class in to two groups and each group should act a role play of ethical problem at APIIT.
One group act a role play about students don't like to wear official clothes to APIIT, the other group act a role play about having relationship at APIIT.

Learning gain of the Lecture & Personal Opinion

Learnt about basic ideas and concepts of the ethics. Get to know how IT creates ethical problems to society. We had fun of making role plays in ethical situations at APIIT.

Priorities Work

19.07.2012

Today we discussed about the second part of the Time Management.

Priorities Work.

There are three ways that we can priorities our work.

  • Spent 75% of time to do MUST to do work. This is a really important work in the students life. Lecturer identify that we should spent a very huge time to do our additional reading and work. According to our time log which we discussed in previous lecture necessary work were come under this category.
  • Spent 20% of time to do SHOULD to do work. According to time log this is the appropriate work we should do after the necessary work.
  • Spent 5% of time to do what you LIKE to do work. This is the lesser work we should do in our daily life. This work should do if it's efficient to our life.

Pareto Principle - The 80-20 Rule

This is the concept founded by Italian economist Vilferdo Pareto in 1906. He identified that twenty percent of the people owned eighty percent of the wealth in his country as reported on About.com 2012. According to that theory in Time Management we can gain that 20% of effort we put in our work can afford 80% of good result.

Then we create a energy circle according to out time log which did on previous day.

Time Wasters.

Self generated and environment issues are the two ways that people waste their time.

Self Generated Issues
  • Disorganization - ex: Think that you put your books and other stationary all over the study table. So it's hard you to find a book immediately. This is the disorganization.
  • Procrastination - ex: You are going to computer lab to do some task. But you couldn't able to concentrate on work what you are doing. You may interested to check emails, visit to Facebook or listening to music.
  • Inability to say No - ex: Your best friend asked you to go shopping with you. If you don't like to go with your friend but you couldn't able to say 'No'.
  • Lack of Interest - ex: You have to submit a assignment in next week, but you don't have any interest to complete it quickly and correctly until the last moment.
  • Unnecessary Perfectionism - When you are doing in a assignment you want everything to be perfect. You don't like to miss the parts which are difficult to handle. So you don't submit it until you create a perfect document, because of this unnecessary perfectionism you may delay the submission.
  • Burn Out - Can not focus on attention or out of effort.
Environment Issue
  • Visitors - ex: When visitors come to your home during exam time, you should be able to stay in the room and study.
  • Telephone calls - You should avoid unnecessary telephone calls during your study hours.
  • Emails and Junk Emails - Don't spent too much time for check emails and junk emails. Avoid unnecessary email.
  • Meetings - ex: Waiting for someone.
  • Crises - Unavoidable circumstances. ex: Power cuts.
To save your valuable time you should avoid all these self generated and environmental issues.

After this lecturer guided us to do a brain test. Given below is the result of that brain text.

Visual Image of How Brain Works

Lecturer checked the homework which he gave us to do on previous day. According to that all five groups come in front of the class and displayed their work. After that we started to talk about time management.

Time Management

Lecturer discussed about what is time management. As noted by Peter Drucker time is totally inelastic, perishable and cannot be replaced. Also time management is helps to manage our time effectively. We discussed about how we manage our time. We can manage our time in many ways. Following are some examples about how to manage time properly.

  • Tackle the most difficult tasks early in the morning.
  • Use to do lists, diaries, wall planners and electronic organizers.
  • Say no if you are asked to do something or go somewhere.
  • Ask why if you are invited to a meeting.
  • Give priority to matters which are urgent rather than those which are important.
  •  Priorities tasks and work in that order.
  • Tackle tasks one at a time, or multi-task.
  • Accept no unscheduled interruptions.
  • Delegate where possible.
  • Work in a place where you will not be disturbed.

Then as homework lecturer asked us to identify our short term goals and long term goals. Also create a  time log of our daily work. Short term goals calculate within one to three years and long term goals calculate within ten to fifteen years.

Time Log

In time log there are mainly four columns which are time, activity, comment for the activity and analyse the work according to the weather that activity is necessary, appropriate and efficient. This time log really helps to prioritized our work.

Learning gain of the Lecture

Identify how to mange time properly. Maintain the time log and prioritize the work. Identify personal goals. Also work effectively.

Personal Opinion

This lecture was really important to me because I identify what were the ways which I waste my time. When I used to create a time log, it really helps me to maintain the time and do the work effectively. Lecturer asked us to list down our short term and long term goals, it actually helps me to highlight what my goals were and start work to achieve those goals.

12.07.2012

Mind Maps

Today was the third day of the ARMPD lecture. We discussed about the Mind Maps.

Mind Map is a graphical technique for visualizing connections between several ideas or pieces of information. It is a visual thinking tool that helps to structural information to kinesthetic learners. It helps to summarizing. Also it great for visual learners. Mind map also used in Walter Pauk's, Cornell Note Taking System.

According to the kinesthetic learning there are four types of people.
  • Visual learners - People who has ideas, data and information associated with images and techniques
  • Auditory  learners  - People who learns through listening
  • Reading or writing learners
  • Kinesthetic  learners -  People who do physical activities

Mind maps can be used according to tree structures and hierarchical structure.

                                                                    Tree structure

                                                            Hierarchical structure

We can use mind maps to generate, visualize, structure, classify ideas, an aid of studying, organizing information, solving problems, and make decisions to summarizing information and consolidating information from different research sources.

Finally lecturer gave us homework to create a mind map of systems.

Learning gain of the Lecture

From this lecture I came to know about mind map and what are the purposes of mind map, also how to use mind map.

Personal Opinion

This lesson is help me how to summarize information and make proper short notes. We can create mind maps with any kind of pictures, shapes and colors.

Introduction

10.07.2012

Today is the second day of our ARMPD (Applied Research Methods Professional Development) lecture. The lecturer in charge of this module is Mr. Eranjan Padumadasa. Lecturer divided the whole class in to five groups and each group consisted in to six members. Students named their groups as super six, furious seven and mine the princess and brat.

These are the tasks given by lecturer.
  • Create a name for the group. The group name should be meaningful and creative.
  • Design a logo to a group.
  • Brief introduction about the person who sit next to each student.

According to the tasks which given by lecturer students were create a name, logo. Also each group come in front of the class and introduced about their friend. In the introduction of the friends we include the basic information about the each person such as their name, age, school, favorite foods, drinks, color, sport, admirable person and so on.

Learning gain of the Lecture

Today s activity was really interesting. Dividing student in to groups was such an interesting thing, because we learnt how to work in a group with different different people. Also students share their friends basic in information. It was a really good thing. Student used to know about their friends inner interests and so on.

Personal Opinion

This activity was really interesting. The person who next to me was Udith Nisakara. I got to about his basic information and interests. From creating a name for the group and logo build a relationship between all the group members. Now I feel that all the class are some way know about their friends.
