Ethics & Codes of Conduct

Today we discussed about the foundation of the Ethics.

What is Ethics?

Basically ethics are good practices, what we follow, something which we really do like guidelines. Also it is a moral values which all people are considers. It points society to balance.

Ethics consists with two points, which are religion and low.

• Religion - It is a program like a software. It teachers you how you are associated with people. These are the things that you should do and what basically you should not do. It covers the certain spectrum. Also it is like a guild lines.
• Low - Low covers the remaining spectrum of the ethics.

That remaining ethics are what we think is good. It depends on person to person, country to country, region to region.

             ex: Public affection.

                  Look after you parents.

Also ethics are tend to revert generation to generation.

        ex: Now a days smoking is prohibited in public places in Sri Lanka. It is unethical when some        smoke in public. Also there is a low to act that people who smoke in public.

How does IT create ethical problems?

From the revaluation of the open economy there are lots of good and bad things came to Sri Lanka. When we are talking about the Information Technology it changes day by day.

             ex: People get spoils - Children get spoiled because of the pornography.

               Some websites are tracking users all movements and sell it to other organisations - That is why  people get lot of spam emails from unknown users.

When we are talking about ethics there are three types of eyes which we should identify.

• What others think about of myself.
• What I think about myself.
• What I am really am, actual person.

So someone (It can be a person or software or expert system) somewhere in the internet really know about who I am.

Types of Privacy.

We discussed about privacy of solitude, means that information privacy put in a physical location. It also called as Inter mercy related to Information. There are many levels of  inter mercy and information. As a example we'll see it based on the relationships.

• Friends to friends
• Partner to partner
• Husband & wife

Among these classifications of groups we can understand what kind of relationship they have each other. Two or more friends relationship is some what close to each other. Partners relationship will be close relationship than friends relationship. Husband and wife relationship will most close relationship than other two parties.

Finally, Ethics are moral values to guide someone's life acting as a decision maker to highlight what is right and what is wrong.

Basic Concepts of Ethics.

• Responsibility - Person who is acting ethically is more responsible because finally it is an accountability.

• Accountability - If something goes wrong that person should get the responsible for that, means that responsible person have to bear the consequences.

                               ex: Class monitor has to take the whole responsibility of the class, if something happens.

• Liability

At the end of the lecture we discussed about how to handle the ethical situations. Lecturer divided the class in to two groups and each group should act a role play of ethical problem at APIIT.

One group act a role play about students don't like to wear official clothes to APIIT, the other group act a role play about having relationship at APIIT.

Learning gain of the Lecture & Personal Opinion

Learnt about basic ideas and concepts of the ethics. Get to know how IT creates ethical problems to society. We had fun of making role plays in ethical situations at APIIT.
